Their run as the dominant region has been done for a while. It's just that the bar for being relevant or "buzzing" has been lowered so much that some random dude having a random hit or even somewhat popular song means the dude is a relevant rapper. So when Yung Transmission puts out some trash single that gets some airtime and a bunch of nikkas talk about him on Twitter he's the next big thing. The south is full of a bunch of Yung Transmissions so some nikkas still think they have shyt on lock. When in reality every region has it's own relevant, young, exciting movements going on musically and the most relevant rappers in the game are from every region.

NY falling off is their fault. I actually liked the stuff they put out back in the day. Too much infighting killed them. Southern artists always collabing with each other. Plus their top artists help up and coming rappers.

It aint like before where one region is dominating. The internet got people coming from everywhere. Although that 2000's Southern sound is still contemporary for the most part.

West Coast reinvented its sound a little bit from them, which is ironic cause they were influenced by the west in the 90s.
East coast is finding its sound again with new producers like Harry Fraud. Even in demand producers like No ID, Alchemist have a versatile East Coast sound on deck if need. Nas and Jay are still going and Joey Badass does have buzz now within hip-hop, so whatever happens with that may dictate where the East Coast going, but its not as dead as we think.
Especially when Hipster culture is mainstream and thats central hub is NY it seems.
