You can tell listening to this that sound wise Death Row was making a different transition from when Dr Dre left. The sound was more smooth, laid back, and Mafioso... You heard that with the Doggfather.. On Makaveli you start hearing more of a darker transition..

Daz started taking over Death Row with more inhouse producing, sound arranging, and beat making.. I remember when the 4 Tupac songs were the selling point(Made nikkaz, Staring thru my Rearview, Life Do Hard, Lost Souls) But this was a start of them embarking a new signature sound.

Another thing is you can tell Snoop Dogg was pretty much GONE from Death Row during this time.. He don't have any songs here other than Hollywood Bank Robbery and he sound like he didn't even wanna be on the muthafukka

What you guys think?

Agree totally.

Another thing: this was cool for us out in outpost towns to hear our type of sounds
on a major label release. Out here (KC), a lot of us copped just on the strength of
“oh chit - Tech N9ne got a song on a Death Row album!”

I always wondered if that was on purpose (seeing as how “Gang Related” was the name and all).
I don’t know if it was the same for Roland (Little Rock), Chocolate (Dallas), or
Jackers (Sacramento) - but it couldn’t have hurt...

Something to keep in mind is that this released in October 97, by that time Kurupt, Snoop and Nate Dogg had all left the label, tracks like Hollywood Bank Robbery and Locd Out Hood are leftovers from 96, These Days was recorded for Nates shelved (in the US at least) G-Funk Classics Vol 1 even Daz contribution Way To Major was a track from late 96 after Pac got killed that Daz reworked, not only differences to the production but also alterations to the lyrics to remove any lines that may have alluded subtly what YGDs Goin Back To Cali said batantly.
