In person, I never really had that issue in any games that I moderately played competitively (actually not too much online either). Not even for games that I wasn't initially acclimated in like shooters, among my friends, was getting my ass whipped at first until I levelled up on them. shyt was mainly cuz I wasn't used to the wonky ass nintendo controller for Goldeneye.
Even among cats that I could say was outright better than me, wasn't typically on some 10-1 level of steez. If anything, more like 5-2 or something. I'd at least get a few wins in here and there. There was this one cat though that owned Killer Instinct on SNES long before I had the game and it was my first time playing the game. I didn't know the system mechanics like that and he only told me 1 combo sequence (to which since he knew it and didn't explain it any further at the time, he could always combo break out of it like nothing). I never ended up getting any wins against him the 1 weekend I was over my homies house (he was a friend of theirs around their way). I ended up copping the game months later and learned it like the bakc of my hand, but was mad that I was never able to play duke again to get my retribution cuz they had lost contact with him by the time I connected up with them again.
