The reactions to that were wild at the time. There were some people claiming he was disrespecting what should have been a somber time, while others arguing hey man it's rock n roll, George Harrison would have appreciated someone sending him out like that. But the biggest reaction I remember was a looooot of people being surprised that Prince was an elite guitarist. The radio singles are one thing but Prince was ALWAYS a staggering guitarist.

I kind of remember the story being that Rolling Stone or somebody put out their list of greatest Guitarists and Prince was not on the list or was low on the list just before this performance.

So that was part of Prince’s motivation to show And prove on a stage of great guitarists on one of the arguably best guitar songs of all time.

Dont really know much about prince tbh as I was born before his time but that was amazing.
