I'll bite. Is this some kind of joke? I saw a clip of the guy quoting Pac and I keep hearing them say 'niqqa'they and other curse words. What I don't hear is anything coherent. I literally have no idea what they are arguing. I think that's one of the more omportant aspects of... speaking.

Hey korey can I talk to you about the CEDA debate?

Sure what about it?

i was kind of interested in what it is exactly
cause it's different from other debates
you know
its kind of like a poetry slam

Well I think that's false…If you watch the whole video, I think you'll see that's it's nothing like a "poetry slam" it's an actual debate…actually ameena and I debated very traditionally…I don't know what you mean by "poetry slam"

sorry i didnt mean to offend
i said poetry slam because in a poetry slam words are spoken kind of fast in a rhythm

Oh no, I'm not offended, it's just many people have seen the first 9 minutes of the debate, and have asked me the same thing…but that is not what i did in the final round…you know? I didn't spit poetry, I read evidence. But the way we were speaking is actually surprisingly a lot slower than most debaters speak…..The top teams in the country are much faster…teams like Georgetown, northwestern…etc

hold on…I'll send you some links

so you'll see that the whole debate community does this

2014 NDT Quarters - Houston LR vs Michigan AP
YouTube

2014 NDT Finals - Georgetown AM vs Michigan AP
YouTube

most of the debates are very fast

hmmm
i'm having a hard time understanding the purpose of speaking as fast you can
it seems like its something you would do for artistic purposes, like a poetry slam
because i can hardly understand anything someone is saying
i can understand some of the words, but i can't understand the argument
and i don't think its possible for anyone to understand it
that's not a traditional debate. this is some other "type" of debate like a rap battle or poetry slam
in a traditional debate you simply talk in a normal tone of voice so people can clearly hear you and understand your argument
for instance this is a real debate

my main question is why exactly do they speak so fast that you can barely understand what their argument is

lol a rap battle or poetry slam? No, it's the way that we debate…if you would watch the debates that I sent I think you would see it differently…Maybe you won't…We're speaking fast….not rapping….

but my question is, how can you understand the argument when someone is speaking so fast
i'm very concerned about your perspective. I could completely respect it if you just admit that its not a real debate, it's just a rap battle, poetry slam, or something very similar. if this is a real debate, how come when presidents debate to get elected they don't talk as fast as you do?

Many of us have been trained to this type of debate

ok but how can you make an argument in response to what someone said, when you can't even understand what someone is saying?

but we can understand what they are saying because we can understand it…we've been trained to understand it

i'm having a hard time believing that. i'm not trying to be difficult i'm serious. i don't believe its possible for anyone to understand what yall said in that debate. i'm watching it right now and i'm trying VERY hard to understand what you're argument is and its completely... inaudible
Here i'm watching the debate here

2014 CEDA Final Round
YouTube
go to 2 hours 28min 38s
can you summarize what she is saying there?

Well……I'm sorry you feel that way…again I stand by what I said, we can understand….it…because we have been trained to both speak it and understand it.

ok well please tell me what your friend said in that video at 2 hours 28min 38s
i'm listening to her debate from that point onward and i cant understand anything

I tracked down one of the participants on facebook and questioned her about what this was all about. I posted the convo above.

Oh and just to make myself clear. Yes I think this is an absolute joke but the participants take it 100% serious. It is absolutely mind boggling.

those two chicks in the first video....i swear to god, if someone spoke to me like that i would call 911 and look for an asthma inhaler to give them.
debating is done by presenting facts to support your case in a clear manner, not by hyperventilating.

I'm glad we have a consensus here that this type of "debate" is a disgrace.

Speaking at high speed in order to get more arguments in during the limited speech time is something that is common in debate. Every team does speech drills to increase their speaking speed. The reason for this is that if you can get in enough arguments so your opponents can't manage to answer them all, you can win by claiming they have no answer to the arguments they missed.

Every debater can understand it, but if not, every team carries written versions that the other team can have upon request. Also, every team posts their arguments online when the tournament season begins. By finals time, every team already knows the basic presentation used by the other team.
