Like Allen last week, Florida school’s run attack proves too much

Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire was less than impressed with his defense Saturday night.
For the second week in a row, his Longhorns were torched on the ground, this time by Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington in a 40-21 loss at Kincaide Stadium in Dallas.
The Tornadoes averaged more than six yards per carry, and Cedar Hill (1-2) only managed three defensive stops.
“We played terribly,” McGuire said. “I don’t have a lot of answers right now.”
Booker T. Washington scored on each of its first two possessions with touchdown runs of 23 and 43 yards. The Longhorns gave up 245 total yards on the ground.
McGuire said he was expecting to see greater improvement from his defense, which gave up 373 rushing yards in a 37-20 loss to Allen last week.
With District 7-5A rival and state powerhouse DeSoto next on the schedule, time is running out for Cedar Hill to find an answer.
“We did some good things at times,” McGuire said, “but they were still able to run the football.”
Washington quarterback Treon Harris ran for 120 yards, and running back D’Von Ballard racked up 139. Each ran for two touchdowns.
Harris was solid through the air when he needed to be, passing for 203 yards and two more touchdowns.
“We figured we could do a good job in the run game,” Washington coach Tim Harris said. “We threw the ball well, also, but we kind of found out that we play in terms of what they’re giving up. And we got to the point where the run was able to give us more leverage.”
The Cedar Hill offense was able to keep up with Washington (2-1) through the first half, matching each touchdown with one of its own.
Senior running back Laquvionte Gonzalez, a Texas A&M pledge, ran for 104 yards and accounted for both of Cedar Hill’s first-half touchdowns.
The Longhorns led 14-12 after his second score midway through the second quarter — their last good drive of the game.
“We’ve got to turn around and play a team that is better than the one we just played,” McGuire said, “and we have to fix a lot of things.”
