Where do you live where teachers make $12.50/hr?

The Median salary for teachers is $50k+ in a vast majority states.

Yes that's the median.. But as the article says and most know, starting out as a teacher "can take years to reach a livable wage" and they usually start on the low end. Private school teachers earn 15k less on avg. Then you have varying years of service and degrees and specializations.. and this is before taxes.

It's probably not 25k for many, but your avg middle school teacher is not starting off making 50k.

I think when people say this they are mostly talking about in this current climate with inflation, home prices, and savings

I know for the vast majority of people not just ITT, but also in the country are not saving for their retirement. Most people making 40-50k a year don't contribute to any sort of 401k or TSP. Add into the fact that housing prices are still 400k+ with 7% interest and our monthly mortgage payment on a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house is probably 2500+ a month easily

Take into account daycare expenses for a working family.. probably costs 1k a month easily. Add in medical expenses, kid activities, school supplies, car insurance, car payments, etc... you're in debt very fast with little to no savings in case of an emergency
And yet, people survive... Today, tomorrow, yesterday

So to say "how can someone survive" making double and triple that is a real slap in the face to people actually having to struggle and make tough decisions. These boys in the grocery thread talking bout "i shouldn't have to cook at home." are the same types asking how to survive as a single man making 60k a year.

You're spoiled and have forgotten that good jobs, 401ks, buying your own house, are things not given. Living by a Walmart, in the big city, wherever you feel like it, aren't things given. Having a high end daycare isn't a given.

There's no denying the downward spiral we're in and how hard it is getting to live HOW WE WANT TO. But let's quit with the how we gonna survive talk. As long as there's people out there with less than me and they making it, I'm going to figure it out. Have some nuts about you or you're NOT going to survive

A lot of people are going to learn the hard way that this shyt is highly competitive and that you're
trying to play ball against someone whose been running the court since they were knee high or at
the very least since they started taking their life seriously in like highschool/college.
There's a lot to be said here but it often comes down to pivoting into high paying careers means you're competing againts
thousands of others also actively in that career field or looking to pivot into that field.
If your resume and skillset aren't competitive, you're effectively wasting your time especially if you only have a certification
behind you.

I'm so thankful that my direct manager is an older Black man in his 50s. He's a data scientist and he is trying to mentor me in my role. Sometimes our 1:1s are him trying to coach me on how to navigate the bureaucracy of my organization and how to show my work. Other times he's assisting me with roadblocks of my day to day.

I think he feels like he needs to give back to brothers and sisters in tech before he retires. I'm fortunate considering I was so scared of the tech layoffs earlier this year and landing this role. My role also tends to be 175k+ commission so I'm fortunate but I want more of us to win.

Love this for you breh. Please pay it forward to younger brehs after you.

I hate to play the @The Devil's Advocate here, but he is probably right. :whoa:

That is a precovid chart from 2019. Between real wage gains and inflation, i wouldn't be surprised if half the states are 50k with the north east in the the mid 60s.

We've also had a bunch of teacher union contracts from the west coast to atlanta get renewed with much higher starting salaries. Even bottom of the barrel school districts like Birmingham are currently starting 1st year teachers at 49k. Next door Atlanta starts in them at 61k. And both these cities are in the South which is the cheapest of the cheap. So im doubtful that 25k exists.
