The coronavirus pandemic has left offices empty. But what was the point of them anyway?

T.O.
ive been doing 3 days at home, 2 in the office for as long as I can remember.

but honestly i'm fine with going a full 5 days at home going forward post pandemic

the benefits are endless, and savings:

-Minimal gas consumption and my client meetings gas mileage is reimbursed partially
-Lower car insurance rates
-No paid parking
-I can workout at any point in the day with minimal disruption
-drop off and pickup my son from school

That's just me.

This is correct. Where I work, employees who work with classified data are still required to go into the office. You can't take that kind of work home.
All of what we’ve said and that’s before we even talk about the chances of data spillage and the like. I know govt employees are starting to get more opportunities to telework but cats that work in geospatial, HUMINT, or anything that’s SIPR or JWICS related are fukked and won’t even get the opportunity

The average employee is only capable of about 2 hours of focused work...

Truth be told, most office jobs are not 40 hr work weeks of productivity.

I think a 4 day week will be more realistic, damn near nobody needs to be in an office on a Friday. The biggest concern for 100% remote work is the amount of job losses that will occur. I think companies will be even more reluctant to hire junior staff members since a lot of what we do is admin work that could easily be offshore :unimpressed:.
WFH will be utilized more and there will be less stigma attached to it no doubt but permanently for 5 days a week? A long way to go before that (if ever) and rightly so.

The office is an essential hub for business and that’s not going anywhere. What got exposed at my company is that we only need one managerial level person and an admin in office on a daily basis. Everyone else could work remotely and come in as needed.
