Above the fray.
This story ties into different conversations we've had about education, court rulings, Stuyvesant High in NYC, Saturday School movement in the United Kingdom, home schooling options, etc. And being proactive.

I think many people use their time, experience, and resources to help younger relatives in an informal way. I see these types of structures and organizations taking root in the next ten years.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m starting to go through the college application process with my young guy. Irvine is actually one of the schools we intend to visit on our west coast trip. We need something like this in NYC in the worst way. I attended career day at a middle school not too long ago and man, the literacy rate of the kids that attend public school here in Brooklyn is not good. Either way, thanks for sharing. This gives me great hope as I thought I was the only one out here being a mentee in an informal setting.

We can always link up and start one brother ... Get the details, learn from them and their experience and help our NYC youths.
Great thread 👍👍👍

I shared this with my sister who's over obsessed with moving to Long Island for their school. She's not putting in any extra work herself with her kids but think a good school district is the answer smh

Good article.

There's nothing wrong with holding districts accountable for education and educational resources, but having personal agency in your own child education is a must. It must be present in the home.

So true. We have to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Making changes in a large public school district is slow and time consuming, but in the mean time....

Agreed. I started working on an outline this week. I’ll tap in once I flesh things out more but trust me, I’m on it.

Dade County
Dope stuff. Tbh, I see it’s supplemental, but this could probably substitute 1 of the 5 “regular” days of schooling in most school systems (most of Dade County schools for instance) and end being more productive.

In a shorter time frame at that (my niece currently goes to school from 9-4:30 :picard::mjtf: motherfukkers preparing 6th graders for soul sucking 9 to 5s)

(A reading circle within your own family is a good idea, I usually gift books to the youngins in my fam, but this idea definitely creates more engagement and see where their head and comprehension is at)
