another trick is that if the professor is not assigning specific assignments out of the book, buy an old version. You can get the old versions on the internet for pennies plus shipping. It will still have all of the material you need to know for the class. They only change the versions to grab more money, 1800's history hasnt changed in the last few years.

I have never looked into an old textbook for reference purposes except for one on grammar. Think about it. One book that was worth keeping. The rest are a joke due to evolving things like accoundting tax law changes, old computer programs that are no longer in use, crap you will never care about but took the class because it was an easy A, etc.
