It goes both ways. Players that might've focused on becoming a lockdown defender are also working more on their shot, so they can be on the court even if they don't eventually fulfill that defensive potential. It's an offense-orientated league so it makes sense to work more on your shooting than on your defense. We don't even talk about " 3 and D" players anymore, the defense part is less important now even for coaches and GMs it seems.
