BALTIMORE —City police said a third suspect has been arrested in connection with the slaying of 16-year-old Arnesha Bowers.
Police said Wednesday that a 14-year-old Raeshawn Rivers has been arrested in connection with Bowers' death. He is being charged as an adult, police said.
Adonay Dixon, 23, and John Childs, 20, were arrested and charged on June 11 with Bowers' death. During a hearing Tuesday, Dixon was denied bail.
Investigators said Rivers knew Childs and Dixon and admitted to taking part in the crime.
Rivers had just turned 14 in March. He's now accused as a principle in the alleged sex assault and killing of Bowers.
Fire crews were called to the 6100 block of Eastern Parkway just before 6 a.m. June 7 and extinguished a blaze after a short time. Investigators said Bowers' body was found during a search of the home. They believe she was killed before the fire was set.
Investigators now call Bowers' death a complex conspiracy of murder, sex assault, home invasion, armed robbery, which was all possibly part of initiation into a gang.
According to charging documents, "The motive appeared to be part of criminal gang activity and possible initiation into a set of the Tree Top Piru Bloods gang."
Police said the girl was killed, because they did not want to leave any witnesses.
"All three talked about a gang initiation that this was supposed to be done in order for one of these guys to get in, and another guy to move higher up within the gang," said Maj. Stanley Branford.
Rivers told investigators he was under duress at the time of the crime but then admitted to having sex with Bowers. Part of her nude body was burned to cover up evidence of the sexual assault, charging documents said. Bowers was also strangled, police said.
Investigators said Rivers tried to throw them off by using the victim's cellphone to text someone else to make it look like that person was involved in the crime, not the suspects charged.
