they lost to the mavs because bron and wade could not co-exist the first year. they always played better when one of them was on the bench.
things didnt run smoothly until spo figured out they needed to go small with bosh at the 5 and get another shooter in the lineup. and that wasnt until the playoffs in their second year. there isnt anything easy about 2 alpha dogs coming together and having to figure out who is going to be 1a and 1b. it takes a lot of patience and sacrifice.
