If I'm lucky enough to get a couple of extra PS5s on launch/this holiday, I would be very tempted to sell them for 1500-2000 on Ebay or elsewhere :yeshrug:
They will be a hot commodity and spoiled rich kids are going to be bugging their parents for one :yeshrug:

What do ya'll think about scalpers buying up next gen pre orders ?
I think that basic economics says if a good is provided and the company underprovides on supply then scalpers will emerge to rectify that. If the company making the good can't meet demand should the product launch at that time?

This is all marketing. They want the product to sell out and be in short supply so it can drive demand even higher.

These companies could be like Apple who takes preorders and just provides a later shipping date. Instead they take orders on a very short supply, cut it off and randomly ship batches all over that customers after launch have to get lucky to find.

I would get it if was a one time thing like a concert or show. or something people need immediately
But nobody has to pay a scalper to get a ps5. They can just wait for the inventory to replenish.
I'm not paying anybody $1500 for a game system that costs $400 just because they can get it to me sooner.

how do yall feel about people doing this with products people really need? there's been a lot of that going on during the pandemic. muthafukkas selling cans of Lysol for $100 and shyt
The alternative is that Lysol sells out, everyone needs it and nobody is able to get more. Scalpers provide a service and assure people can get a product even in short supply if they’re able to pay the price the market reaches equilibrium at. When a product is rare and in demand it should cost more.

It's shytty and self interested, and worse when it comes to stuff that was in short supply like at the beginning of the pandemic. It takes already limited stock and effectively creates an even shorter supply. The only reason people scalp is to make money off of the back of somebody else, playing off of their desperation. It's not enterprising, it's not filling a need in the market. It just fukks it up for other people.

The other side to that coin, in non essential item scalping, is the FOMO people who feel like they gotta have it at all costs. They need to exercise some self control. If it can't be had at or under normal price, don't spend the money, it's not worth it. If you complain about scalpers out of one side of your mouth, but on the other side gush about paying twice the price for the product because you just couldn't go without, you're part of the problem. That just encourages scalpers to continue. Same premise with microtransactions - you can't complain but turn around and buy the fake currency and try to juelz out a justification.

in many of these situations the retailer puts a limit on how many customers can buy. they do similar stuff with gpu's, and such, but scalpers find ways around it

Difference between a console and a necessity like Lysol during a pandemic is obviously that a console is a luxury, and Lysol is a necessity.

When people push up prices on those type of items, ethics need to be put on the table.

The laws of a marketplace are what they are: demand goes up, pricing goes up. No doubt about that. I do think that for both the original supplier or the scalper to do that with products during a pandemic where it could mean healthy vs ill - I do not believe that is ethically acceptable.
