Foster shows Smart's recruiting power

Now that Reuben Foster (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) has committed to the University of Alabama, the question is, will it stick through signing day?

Regardless of what happens from here, Foster’s decision on Monday shows the relentless pursuit that Kirby Smart and the Crimson Tide coaching staff had throughout the process.

Even when Foster flipped from Alabama to Auburn over the summer and went as far as to get an Auburn tattoo on his arm, the Alabama coaches didn’t give up. Smart was talking to him just a few weeks later about removing the tattoo and coming back to the Tide.

It has been a wild ride, one that might not be over, but if he does in the end sign with Alabama, the Tide will be getting a very good football player.

Foster is the top inside linebacker in the ESPN 150 and ranked No. 16 overall. The 6-foot-2, 242-pound prospect trimmed down this season and looked much improved from the summer. He played some of his best football last month at the Under Armour All-America Game.

At Alabama, he projects to play one of the inside linebacker spots. He might not break the rotation as a freshman with C.J. Mosley coming back and Trey DePriest stepping into a larger role, but don’t be surprised if he sees the field in some capacity, possibly on special teams.

Down the road, Foster has an opportunity to carry on Alabama’s legacy of great linebackers. Since Nick Saban took over, the Tide have sent a number of defensive players to the NFL, including former star linebackers Rolando McClain and Dont’a Hightower, both of whom were taken in the first round of the NFL draft.

Outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw just missed the first round a year ago, but he helped lead the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl victory this season as a rookie.

But before we start looking too far ahead, Foster has to sign with Alabama. The commitment on Monday was a huge first step, but it’s not over until he signs on the dotted line.

Pretty sure Derrick Henry will get some touches next year, wouldn't surprise me if they move him to H-Back though. Looks like Foster might have to redshirt if he signs with Bama, cause the our depth at Linebacker is deep.

Mike Groh helps Tide land No. 1 class

When the ink dried Wednesday night, the University of Alabama came away with the No. 1 class for the second year in a row. Head coach Nick Saban garners most of the attention, but the job by his staff should not go unnoticed.

Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart deserves credit for staying with Reuben Foster. The ESPN 150 linebacker initially committed to Alabama, then flipped to Auburn -- but in the end, he signed with the Crimson Tide. Smart never gave up on him.

However, when you look at back at this class three or four years down the road, a lesser-known coach might have had the biggest impact.

Mike Groh, UA’s recruiting coordinator, ran point for the likes of Dee Liner, A’Shawn Robinson, Altee Tenpenny and Walker Jones. He also played a huge role in stealing ESPN 150 wide receiver Robert Foster, a Pennsylvania native, away from Pittsburgh, and he nearly pulled the nation's No. 2 safety Antonio Conner out of Mississippi.

Liner might have been his best work, though. The in-state defensive lineman, ranked No. 26 in the ESPN 150, committed to Auburn as a sophomore. Groh served as the main contact as the Tide didn't stop recruiting him and was a regular at Muscle Shoals High School. He went to a number of their games, and more than anything, he kept that relationship with Liner.

“He’s probably the best recruiter that ever recruited me,” Liner said. “We always stayed in touch with each other to see how each other was doing -- even on Sundays.”

Eventually, Liner decommitted from the Tigers, and when it came time to sign his letter of intent, there wasn’t even a question mark. He was going to Alabama.

The surprise of the Tide’s 2013 class was Robinson. He was committed to Texas for nearly a year, but just a week before signing day, he decommitted from the Longhorns. On Wednesday, he signed with the Tide. Again, it was Groh who spearheaded the recruiting efforts.

Groh and Saban made an in-home visit with Robinson in late January. Later that week, he told Texas that he was going to decommit.

The recruit who fans might forget is ESPN 150 running back Altee Tenpenny. There was no drama on signing day, but that doesn’t mean there was never any drama.

He committed to Alabama more than a year ago, but fending off Arkansas -- the hometown school -- and convincing Tenpenny to come to Tuscaloosa despite having three other top backs in the class was no easy feat for Groh.

The Alabama assistant coach just finished his second season with the Tide, and he’s quickly become one of the top recruiters in college football. In his two years as recruiting coordinator, Alabama has finished with back-to-back No. 1 classes.

Alabama: 2014 prospects to watch

TE Jeb Blazevich
(Charlotte, N.C./Christian)
Although Alabama signed ESPN 150 tight end O.J. Howard on Wednesday, the Tide missed on a number of other tight end prospects -- Hunter Henry, Josh McNeil and Greg Taboada. The coaching staff will likely target the position again in 2014, and the top player available is Blazevich, a Watch List tight end. He has offers from all over but recently said he’s only considering Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Ole Miss. He was in Miami to watch the Tide take home its second national championship in as many years.

DE Da’Shawn Hand
(Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge)
Hand is an elite defensive end that is considered by most to be the No. 1 recruit in the country. Sound familiar? Names like Jadeveon Clowney and Robert Nkemdiche should come to mind. Alabama recruited both prospects but didn’t land either one. The Tide are hoping to change that trend in 2014. Hand released a new top five earlier this week, and Alabama made the cut. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound star visited Tuscaloosa over the summer and was blown away. He has high praise for the Tide’s program, but so did Nkemdiche at this time last year.

CB Marlon Humphrey
(Hoover, Ala./Hoover)
The No. 1 cornerback in the state -- maybe the Southeast -- whose father played for Alabama, no brainer right? Tide fans hope so. Based on his position and overall talent, Humphrey has to be towards the top of Alabama’s board. He’s a lockdown cornerback who’s both athletic and physical, which is what makes him so coveted the UA coaching staff. There’s no doubt that he’ll have offers from every top program in the country if he doesn’t already, but the Tide are hoping to keep him close to home and let Nick Saban develop him.

OT Cameron Robinson
(West Monroe, La./West Monroe)
Alabama put together a solid offensive line class for 2013, but the coaches missed on Laremy Tunsil, the only true left tackle target. Expect the Tide to again make the line a priority in 2014, and Robinson has the look of that prototypical left tackle. He’s 6-foot-6, 325 pounds. He has the strength to be a good run blocker and the quickness to still be a good pass blocker. There are a lot of talented junior offensive line prospects who already have Alabama high on their list, but Robinson might be at the top of the Tide’s wish list.

RB Bo Scarbrough
(Tuscaloosa, Ala./Northridge)
Scarbrough is the lone commitment for Alabama in 2014, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy to hang on to him. The local native has already expressed interest in taking all of his visits, and expect him to enjoy the recruiting process. Also, the Tide signed four ESPN 150 running backs in 2013, meaning the position isn’t a priority for 2014, but athletes like Scarbrough don’t come around every day, especially in your backyard. Regardless of what position the 6-foot-2, 215-pound prospect plays at the next level, he’ll make an impact.
