The Federal Trade Commission and the antitrust unit of the Department of Justice have submitted a request to the US Copyright Office seeking an exemption to copyright law. This exemption would enable business owners to carry out repairs on their “commercial and industrial equipment” in a more efficient manner.
The federal authorities have stated that the restriction on business owners to hire third-party repair people hampers competition and leads to higher repair costs.
