Twenty years ago, an RPG called Final Fantasy VI came out in Japan, and really, it's all just been downhill for video games since then.

Square's seminal RPG for the Super Nintendo was filled with issues: buggy skills; weird translations; way too many fights that were way too easy. But somehow, against all odds, the game once called Final Fantasy III struck a chord and resonated with millions of RPG fans. There were just so many memorable moments. Defending the esper on the frozen cliffs of Narshe. Stealing giant robots and escaping from an enemy camp as your party threw down one-liners, Lethal Weapon-style. Suplexing a train. Recruiting a sasquatch. Driving a giant castle across the ocean. Stealing enemy soldiers' clothes to sneak through a captured town. Falling in love with Terra, and Locke, and Celes, and Edgar, and all the other 16-bit characters who somehow felt more real and compelling than any 3D hero we've seen to date.

...The friggin' Opera House.


Final Fantasy VI was lightning in a bottle, and it's hard to know if Square will ever capture anything like it again. Happy 20th birthday, FFVI. You're the best.

I remember randomly renting this game as a kid, and coming back to challenge it for real in my high school years

What are some of your best FFVI memories, coli?

I remember randomly running into Shadow at the various towns before he joined... chilling there with interceptor-- he had a ninja mask on, but you could tell he was making a face underneath it.

Or Sabin's scenario-- suplexing trains

And I'll bet you didn't know how broken Gau was I had him catching bodies in the Narshe battle blasting enemies with level 2 spells with his rages before most of my squad knew ANY magic. And catscratch... , especially with the Snow Scarf (secret equip that only Gau and Mog could use, that had the highest defense bonus in the entire game) And that was just beginning. Don't even get me started on the Nightshade rage-- it caused ANYTHING it hit to go wild and murk itself-- even the final boss

Terra and Celes were the most unmesswithable characters in the game
Stick Terra with the Minerva and a Paladin Shield...
And Celes with the Illumnia/Lightbringer

Locke's swag was impeccable-- but don't call him a thief

Edgar and Setzer weren't slouching in that area either though...

And let's not forget Kefka, the GOAT Final Fantasy villain

Especially if you didn't wait for Shadow and he wound up getting killed

My first Final Fantasy. Fave memory has gotta be that twist about halfway through the game. Kefka had me wanting to put the beats on him for like 30 hours. I also liked how there weren't near any trash characters, I just wish you could control Umaro though.
