And paying a severance is paying some salary, albeit its independent.

Also, paying a portion of a former player's salary often happens in the NBA and MLB.

I had hoped Messi would stay a few more years at the top. He is past his best but still good enough to play at the elite level. Having said that, i wouldn't be surprised to see a Barcelona loan deal in the off season. Didn't Beckham or someone else keep going out on loan to Europe while in the MLS?
