I actually believe in Hip Hop in a religious way.
But the effort to package Hip Hop as an analogue to traditional religions is corny to me.
Hip Hop actually is a methodology. A way of studying and organizing.
When it comes to religions, Hip Hop would explain the overall concept, then drill down and examine them. Hip Hop would be a course in religion, not bound to any one of them.
It's about synthesis. Processing all the info and combining things that might seem separate or contrary.
Same way the pioneers were finding break beats on Mickey Mouse albums, Rock, Country.. didn't matter as long as there was a dope break. Every instrument and musical style there is prolly has a Hip Hop beat made out of it.
But I expand that approach to politics, cooking, fitness, philosophy.. you name it. The Hip Hop approach is that everything is in bounds and to use pieces from all of it.
That said: not sure exactly what KRS thinks the essence of Hip Hop is, but couching it in something resembling the Bible is offputting.
