A dedication ceremony marked on Saturday a celebration of the International African American Museum (IAAM) ahead of its grand opening to the public.
Award-winning actor and Dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts Phylicia Rishad served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the celebration.
It featured remarks from former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama, Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Rev. Telly Gadsden, pastor of the St. Mark United Methodist Church, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, NASA’s Charles Bolden Jr., Barbados’ Consul General Rudy Grant, and American anthropologist Johnnetta Cole.
The museum’s CEO Dr. Tonya Matthews, and primary founder former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley shared a message during the Saturday morning ceremony.
Dignitaries like State Rep. JA Moore, State Sen. Darrell Jackson, and U.S. Congressman James Clyburn delivered messages along with performances by musicians and poets including BeBe Winans, Candace Glover, Amadou Kouyate, Cheick Hamala Diabaté, Nikky Finney, Djassi DaCosta Johnson, the McIntosh County Shouters, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra
