The whole joe was a gangster thing is overrated. Dude game from a rich family that already had power. He just used gangster to make even more money.

His Dad was a politician, so you right, he did come from money and power. But at the same time his Dad was a politician in Boston in the 1800’s, where it was basically Tammany Hall status, the lines between politics and the streets wasn’t that clear. Gangs back then was heavily involved in political corruption, basically a Cac Boston version of Gangs of New York or even that 70’s/80’s yardie shyt in Jamaica. He was a gangster, just an old throw back example of one that most folks can’t relate to today cuz politics (on the surface) are totally different now. Not sure how his beginnings was overrated, he got even richer than he already was off an illegal substance, and parlayed that into one of the most well known Cac dynasties in America. The dude was a crook, he broke bread with the most important mobsters of his time, even got his son into the White House off a favor from the Chicago Mob. JFK would’ve lost to Nixon in ‘60 had Chicago not sent the goons out to scare folks into voting. Not sure how you can say he’s overrated, that kinda sounds like the makings of a Cac snow job/history re write to me.

I see him more as the Corrupt type than a gangster.

-the best book for a general overview/history would be Five Families by Selwyn Raab. The downside is that it covers a lot of gound, from the very beginning up to the turn of the century, so it can't be very detailed.
.
:jaymelo: just copped it

Joe was a criminal, thug, gangster, thief, womanizer, liar, and stock manipulator.

Just because he wasn't a loanshark breaking people's legs himself, doesn't make him any less gangster.

He was infinitely more criminal and gangster than the typical street dude.

How much power/influence did Joe have compared to the mafia back then?

Was he more criminal and gangster than Donald Trump's father Fred Trump?

I would say Kennedy operated at a much larger scale.

Make no mistake though Trump's draft-dodging grandfather was a tough SOB, he operated in (I believe) Seattle prior to it having laws, it was no man's land and Trump's grandpops ran Inns/Bars/Whorehouses there.

You had to be bout that life to survive as business owner in a lawless territory, especially as an immigrant .

I saw it on the Netflix documentary about Trump's paternal lineage from Bavaria.

And for the record, I despise Trump.
