I find it quite interesting, and at the same time a little perplexing.

At first thought, I imagine that I'd prefer the person screaming expletives at me in practice and demanding that I push it to the limit, be someone who has pushed it to the limit themselves, and knows what it feels like to be doing this out here in this 88 degree heat, etc.

But upon further review it seems that some of the most successful NFL coaches, past and present, have zer0 NFL playing experience. As was published in a 2014 NFL.com article, "...Still, as late as 1984, half of the league’s head coaches -- 14 of 28 -- had played in the NFL. This season only Ron Rivera of Carolina, Doug Marrone of Buffalo, Jason Garrett of Dallas, Jim Harbaugh of San Francisco, Jeff Fisher of St. Louis and Ken Whisenhunt of Tennessee played in the NFL.."

"NFL Live reported that Hall of Fame coaches Vince Lombardi, Paul Brown, Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick, also never played pro football."

Coaching and playing are different animals. Playing is physical + mental. Coaching is all mental. So it stands to reason that you have guys whose mental is off the charts but their physical wasnt that strong going into coaching. Beyond that non-players have a head start on moving up the coaching ranks. They are working to establish their coaching career while players are still playing. And unlike in basketball showing out on the coach on some "you never played the game" shyt can get you cut.

Football might be more strategy based than any other sport out there. There are some serious nerds out running these teams at every level.

Mike Leach never played college football yet almost every team in the Big12 runs his offense and he has a huge coaching tree.

I was going to get into it about the number of College Football head coaches with no football experience but I honestly don't think that it's as big a contrast as what exists in the NFL.
