Malls could have adapted to communal places with gyms, more arcades, more theaters and event spaces and stores could have pivoted to be in person technical support and service, returns, demo and pickup places with sales being secondary.

But this is what happens when you have a bunch of old heads running businesses they thought was too big to fail.

In west Texas there was one big regional mall and on Saturday afternoon it was the place to be. My granny would give me 10-20 bucks and I'd have a blast. And still go home with some change.

I’ve been to malls with grocery stores inside of them and car dealerships.

The problem is, after about a week corporate ain't trying to hear about, "sales being secondary."
That's how a lot of retail stores are ruined, when the higher ups push the front line reps to focus on sales only.
