What now
I got to go read this
Edit:
The special operations fighters are ostensibly there to train and assist the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an umbrella group of Kurdish and Arab fighters that have proven to be a key ground asset in the US-led coalition's battle against ISIL.
AND THE CYCLE CONTINUES
We just tried to intervene in Syria too, this is further proof the agenda will continue no matter who the residing President is, goodness knows Trump doesn't understand strategic geography.
Syria is a big chessboard. Trump is just using Obama's anti ISIS strategy and giving it more muscle. We will see if he ends the Syrian rebel program. But I think Syria is going to be federalized into zones of influence.
The Kurds are playing for survival
The Turks and their Syrian rebel allies took Al Bab from ISIS. But they can't move further. The map below shows the stand off in the north where the grey (Turkish army plus rebel Operation Euphrates Shield), green (other rebels), Kurds (yellow) and regime (red) are all at. ISIS territory is in black but most of it is uninhabited.
Why is this happening?
The Kurds (SDF and YPG) let the Syrian Army take back the villages under its control. The Syrian Army is being convinced the Kurds can be an ally not only against ISIS but against Turkish influence. Moscow has been advancing Kurdish autonomy to Damascus.
And we all know the USA has been assisting the Kurds too. The US has two allies who hate each other in Turkey and the Syrian Kurds. The solution that both the US and Russia came to has been to tell the Turks to sit back and let the Raqqa offensive happen with the Kurds and the regime.
You haven't heard a peep from Damascus throwing a fit over more US troops. It's cause there's more coordination between the Russians and US than we are led to believe.
All of this is happening within a few KMs of each other. The Syrian Army is in Manbij with the Russians/Iranian advisors. The US Special Forces are also there.
