Vince didn't want Bret to go to WCW with the WWF title...so instead he manipulates events so that Bret has more momentum going into WCW than holding the strap on the way in could have given him.

Yes WCW ended up fukking Bret up in many ways but nobody could have seen his inept booking or the stroke coming. Everybody talks about what could have been with him in the wake of the Screwjob.

Vince became one of the greatest heels in the business.

HBK's legacy was tarnished but he already had an a$$hole reputation anyway and his 2000s run restored some goodwill.

What makes me think the Screwjob could have been worked is that it worked out way too well for everybody involved...

Bret held a grudge for over a decade. No way it was a work

Honestly, I think that was more about Owen and his stroke than the precipitating incident. I could see how all parties involved might think it was a good move - drum up publicity for WWF with a real-life controversy, send Bret out to make the money Vince couldn't and then take him back into the fold in a heartwarming reconciliation later. (Which basically happened.) But Owen died, and then Bret's career got cut dreadfully short.

So, instead of having a multi-year arc of betrayal and redemption, shyt went left.

I'm not saying that's how it actually went. But it's a sturdy framework for a theory. We should call Jesse Ventura and Antonio Inoki, see if they have any ideas.
