White supremacist agencies like the media have been pushing the narrative that western European features are the most attractive features ever and anyone that is darker is not attractive. These have long lasting effects on people's self esteem, effects that we see when a child chooses a white doll over a Black doll, the countless debates we have about who's attractive and who's not and also spills over into colorism as those darker people with Euro features are more favored, hence why a darker woman will go get a nose job or whatever to make her nose more thin. Look at the outrage over Kanye's recent casting call. Skin whitening creams are big business all over the world.
As for preference, how about instead of using science to justify beauty, they just accept that beauty is subjective and we don't all find the same things attractive.
