The conflict in Sudan is not a religious war. Both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces are predominantly Muslim. The leadership on both sides are Muslims. This is a struggle between two military factions competing for state power after Sudan’s democratic transition collapsed following the 2021 coup.

While the RSF has committed horrific ethnic violence, particularly against Masalit and other non-Arab groups in Darfur, this violence is being weaponized as a tool in a fundamentally political power struggle.
