The Neptunes really sounded like aliens who had come from outer space on Superthug

It seemed like a teenage me heard ‘Superthug’ everywhere in 98-99 and at that time it felt like the song officially stamped/popularized the Neptunes mainstream. They produced ‘Lookin At Me’ by Mase and that charted higher from what I recall, even though Superthug felt like the bigger record and was played all over the place.
Superthug felt way bigger. Every time I turned on BET that shyt was playing.

Back when producers had distinct sounds that set them apart from one another :wow:

Facts.

You would go to a producer for a sound! I remember when Premier said that he liked that people come to him for his sound because it made him unique. And it's true. Back in the 90's, especially. The signature sound was what set most greats apart.

Yeah, Superthug was a bigger song and their breakout song as a production duo. It was then they had the spotlight on them after that

Lookin’ At Me was like the prequel of what was bubblin’ or knocking at the door but Superthug knocked the door down

Exactly it gave us variety and producers were challenging themselves by trying to be as creative as they could with pushing the game forward with new sounds

This was when the genre was shifting to non sample beats. Not a lot of people could pull that off and it sound fresh, neptunes imo mastered that sound before anyone.

Anyone that knows about producing knows it's so hard to sound design and the sound not come out corny

Nah, The Neptunes didn't master that spund before anyone. "Superthug" was them coming into their own and this was nearly two years after Timbaland had been dominant. So we're talking after Timbaland had success with Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and Missy. Even Magoo went platinum and that was largely due to "Up Jumps Da Boogie" which wasn't sample based.

I hated it when it first came out and thought that Nore had completely left that grimy NYC sound of CNN's debut in the dust in a blantant grasp at commercial success. :yeshrug:

I've grown to appreciate the Neptunes immensely (especially Kelis' 1st album) but some of those keyboard sounds they used back in the day sounded so goddamn casio cheap to me.

Rolling around in the old blue car drinking 40s with this on back then (Me, Troy and this dude named James) zoning out to this shyt! That came on you had to turn it up and blast it because it was the hottest thing out. Those were good days.

Nores biggest songs hands down came by the Tunes being this along with Oh No and Nothing along with probably I'm A G (I know that was Pharrell alone but still). This song though is a classic! shyt was crazy.
