I was having a real long conversation with my girl Mary last night as we went on a walk, and it hit me that The NeverEnding Story was about dealing with depression and anxiety. Specifically dealing with the depression and anxiety that come along withg a parent very early in life. Sebastián father was a dikk who buried himself with work as a copping mechanism, while Sebastián drifts off into a fantasy. MoonChild never existed. It was probably a picture of his mother around the sake age as himself, and that's the image he chose to preserve his mother with in his mind. The nothingness was his memory of her fading...

Makes a lot of sense. As a kid I wouldn't have possibly said the film was about "depression" but even then I could sense Sebastian was escaping a reality that was difficult for him to deal with.

Side note: I remember rewatching the movie in college and thinking it was trash lmao. It def didn't stand the test of time for me. But when I was a kid? Top ten movie. I remember it used to always come on UPN when it was raining outside, and that made it even better. Especially the scenes where he's escaping the rain, running inside the read the book.
