After being a HUGE fan of these two artists, these albums threw me for a loop when they were released. I just wasnt prepared for them to go so far left and was used to hearing a certain type of music from them. I dont remember saying they were trash, just saying that they sounded so different from not only their previous releases but from anything else that was out at the time. I figured it was going to take me some time to get in to them.

20-something years later and the proof that these recordings were ahead of their time is evident because I think they have aged beautifully.

Thoughts?

Experimental albums from artists who were trying something different and expanding and evolving with their art

The New Danger is a better album than Electric Circus

The New Danger has so many gems on it:

Champion Requiem
Zimzallabim
Close Edge
The Panties
Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March
Blue Black Jack
Modern Marvel
The Easy Spell
Sunshine
Grown Man Business
The Beggar
Life Is Real
Sex, Love & Money

Electric Circus was underrated. There was no appetite for that level of experimentation back then, but a record like To Pimp A Butterfly managed to do that with a bit more mainstream support.

I never liked New Danger aside from a few joints (Sunshine, The Panties). I don't like Mos' singing/howling thing he does

Electric Circus was wack to me. Haven't listened in ages but the last time I heard it me and a few friends were just listening to it to laugh at it.
New Danger is easily better. I like that album. Close Edge is like one of his best songs ever.

Electric Circus sounded like all of Common’s later stuff after 2008….

Album was head of its time.

The New Danger was meh to me. I’ll play True Magic versus the New Danger.

Someone needs to leak the Mos Def & Mannie album along with the Black Jack Johnson album.

I’ll take Electric Circus only because of the Come Closer video. It’s has one of the most unintentionally hilarious moments when u think about it.

Common went from standing outside in front of burning trash cans in the cold to holding signs up wearing those crochet pants

Common hasn't rapped like he did on EC since EC. He was on fire. I fukk with the album.

I'm not a fan of much Mos Def post-BoBS. Maybe it's time for me to go back and give them all a fresh listen.

My problem is the production shift. Production is really what I listen for. No matter how dope the mc if production not matching I can’t do it. His two albums prior were mostly produced by NO ID and Dilla. Still a lot of Dilla on EC, but Questlove and Neptunes I wasn’t feeling. New Danger experimentation felt less forced than EC.
