The new Star Wars video game is getting some serious flack from angry fans and worried regulators.

Gamers have complained in recent days that it takes huge amounts of time -- or money -- to unlock features in Star Wars Battlefront II. Regulators in Belgium, meanwhile, are looking at whether the game constitutes a form of gambling.

The Belgian Gaming Commission is investigating how players in Battlefront II and similar games are rewarded by unlocking "looting boxes."

The idea is that players pay real money to unlock a virtual "looting box" without knowing what kind of reward is inside. They also don't know how many boxes they might need to unlock in order to finish the game.

It appears DICE/EA may be making some immediate changes to the progression system

It's a shame because the actual gameplay is fun. But it's getting overshadowed by this bullshyt. Glad companies are getting called out on this. Sad it hasn't happened earlier but it probably needed a big franchise like Star Wars to get the proper notice.

I miss the good ol' days when the $50-60 you paid for a game was all you needed to pay to fully enjoy a game :francis:

Problem is no one buys these games anymore with a few exceptions e.g. Horizon, Bloodborne. Bethesda have released four critically well received SP only games this year and all have bombed. In contrast, Shadow of War is number one in sales this month. People don't support the right companies.

I feel like loot boxes are okay as long as they’re cosmetic. They become :hhh: when it affects pay to win in multiplayer.

shyt is weak even as cosmetics

They put so much filler bullshyt in cosmetic boxes and the returns you get for duplicates or shyt you don’t want makes people wanna either buy the box anyways or not even bother

Honest gameplay is what should be unlocking things

the best idea loot boxes had was from Blizzard where it was impossible to get duplicates for a short period of time. I am sure this slowed down the profits for Blizzard for Overwatch during this month long period or whatever it was, but it seemed more "right".

You pay $40-60 for a game, then another $40-100 on loot boxes, thats more than old games were getting. But with random % of drops, its easy to spend even more than that on rare items. Its not "illegal" because its no different than buying a card pack from a store and hoping for a rare card like Ken Griffey Jr rookie card

edit: I am talking strictly cosmetic items. I honestly feel Dota 2 has the best "pay for cosmetic" system. ($0.30 cents to $4.99 per item or $9.99 for an entire cosmetic set for a character you like a lot) but then again DOTA 2 had no initial $40-60 purchase as well. This system seems to make the most sense for all parties involve. Big companies, if its an active game, gets millions of people buying .30 cents - $4.99 items for multiple characters they like. The customer gets the EXACT item they want with no random luck.
