"Jay Z’s performance at the Pace Gallery, a transparent rewrite of Marina Abramović’s “The Artist Is Present,” took place three days before the Zimmerman verdict, so what could he have done to leverage his influence? He could have ditched the idea of lip-synching to “Picasso Baby” (a weak retread of “99 Problems”) and recreated the Zimmerman-Martin showdown with everyone in the room, following them around the perimeter of the gallery and scaring the shyt out of them, eventually pulling a gun"

They praise his career as a whole but called MCHG an embarrassment, that's too much praise?

To be considered ether? I'd think so.... They praised his career and him as an individual and his stature and basically put him in competition with himself.

Doesn't matter though the entire article had some pretty weak points (not about MCHG... no opinion is wrong when it comes to music)

They said as an individual he was a shallow farce, that's praise?

The New Yorker should not write about Hip Hop at all. Their style of editorial just doesn't interpret the genre well.

thing is though, the writer is a credible hip hop writer. sasha frere jones been writing about hip hop since the 80's 90's. he wrote for Ego Trip, Village Voice, Vibe etc. he is one of the most respected music writers out there period, probably top 5. so he aint just some caac herb , he is a legit hip hop lover. and he has been a jay supporter since the late 90's, he just a dissapointed fan like everyone else.
