Why is ny and jersey counted as one "city" when they are two different states while Oakland and la. are separate even tho they are the same state?

parts of jerz & parts connecticut is considered the new york metropolitan area

its kinda hard to explain, you just have to live here to understand it

NY Nj are both very different and very similar. Many times when pwople measure things or use statistics about nyc they include nj li and ct . Most outsiders cant tell the difference between a Nyer and North NJan. half of nyc's suburbs are in nj. In nj we are very nyc centric meaning we get our news from there. We commute there we club /party there,many of us have lived there, same sports etc.

The best way to compare the NY/NJ is to compare it to the DMV, with Maryland =NJ if baltimore wasnt a major city (like newark)

I live here and while we got love for nyc, we do not claim to be NY nikkas like that. And neither do they claim us.

Even living 5 minutes across the river from Manhattan doesn't mean it's the same culture. Very different.

Yeah, same with South Jersey/Philly. Literally five minutes apart via bridge but distinctly different from each other even though people lump us all together.
