JT Mollner 🍳 with Strange Darling so I have faith.
Director of Strange Darling, Writer of The Long Walk, Tobe Hooper's writing partner on the original involved, and A24 producing...I think that's a really strong combo.

It's wild to hear that they beat out some other heavyweights for it too. Jordan Peele and Osgood Perkins were name-dropped as also trying to get the property.

I watched this with shoddy subtitles and it was still pretty damned good. The concept is great and the movie managed to not get boring in spite of taking place in essentially the same location for 80% of the run time.

I want a new Serbian Film!

Something or similar push all the buttons. fukk it.
I genuinely consider A Serbian Film the most messed up movie I've seen.

Martyrs and Antichrist are typically mentioned with it. I've only seen Martyrs though, and it's definitely foul. I've seen people put The Coffee Table in the same category, though that's a SUPER DARK comedy tbh. Other than those, it's hard to even think of anything that comes close. Best Wishes to All is pretty messed up.

ASF went far as they can go with breaking taboo and subjecting the premise into a controversial debacle, it was a nice well made film, no bullshyt cheap and cheerful gore or trying to make people belive its a snuff flick..the makers got what they wanted- ATTENTION!

i tink SALO is filth too, for that time it was fukking filthy LOL..

Im sure there's japanese and hong kong catergory 3 that went fukked up with dealing with kids, babies and animals LOL..like tons.

Yeah, there are definitely a bunch of depraved movies. But they're usually really poorly made. ASF and Martyrs are technically really well made, while covering some really foul territory.

You're right about Japanese film, I think Suicide Club has a case for belonging in this conversation in spite of some limitations with the effects that are apparent from the opening scene. Takashi Miike has a bunch too. We watched Ichi the Killer during the Halloween marathon, and it's definitely a good fit. Visitor Q is supposed to be pretty damned depraved too, but that's another one I haven't watched.

It was on limited release, but I made time to get out and give the new joint Whistle a look.

A misfit group of unwitting high school students stumble upon a cursed object, an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They discover that blowing the whistle and the terrifying sound it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down.

I've seen some heads call this genre "gimmick horror," but I consider it part of the "curse horror" sub-genre. To me that's any movie where a person or group of people get marked for death by a supernatural force that has a set of rules for survival attached. The Ring, It Follows, Smile, The Grudge, and Wish Upon are all examples.

In this case, the rules are really well put together and I won't spoil them since that's half the fun of a curse horror movie. The plot is itself is a shortcoming, but not a disaster. It's just incredibly generic. If you're a frequent poster in this thread, you'll recognize the characters and probably be able to guess the death order within fifteen minutes.

But, in spite of the basic plot, this jawn is entertaining! The actors are doing their best to pick things up, the direction and cinematography takes a real swing at elevating the material, and the deaths are the real winner here. I'd heard this has a "death of the year" candidate, and they weren't exaggerating. In fact, I saw a kill and thought "that's gotta be it," but then another one had me like "or was it that one."

So, this one joins Primate on my "it's not winning awards, but this was a lot of fun to watch" list. It's got plot contrivances, some effects come up short, and it doesn't reinvent the wheel...but it's got great kills, good performances, and a really fun set of rules that I could see working for sequels.
