Dude was the sole reason West Ham came in 6th that year. He balled his way to the Euro 2016 squad. Honestly, if he balls this season and next he could possibly make a case for Euro 2020.

He is at the level where he belongs, just a classic talisman club player. Not consistent enough for an elite team and would be burdened with defensively responsibilities, which would negate what he is good at. At Marseille, West Ham and Lille he was given freedom and had the team built around him.

That's true, especially with the way Deschamps plays. Payet is like Ozil, a luxury player that needs very hard working people around him. Deschamps needs everyone to work hard on both sides of the ball hence why Griezmann and Matuidi always get the nod.
