Idk if this is still an option for him. He's already made his Senior team appearance for Italy so he may not be able to switch. I think the game was in the UEFA Nations league so that counts as a competitive match to FIFA and he'd be "cap-tied".

It's not like Kondogbia who only played for France at the friendly level so he was able to switch to the CAR (Central African Republic).
