Mondays are bunker days for me… locked in recordings and film studies at the station from 6am to 9pm (at the earliest). Because of that I was with Devin Gardner when the Erick All news broke, and upon hearing it, neither of us were surprised that he’d come to that decision. Not because we had heard inklings of that being his plan, but because we’d heard about a long period of discontent on his part.
At various points during the fall, All had shared that he was feeling a bit like the forgotten man after his injury/surgery. Sources indicated he felt he wasn’t being included, reached out to, checked on – almost as if he wasn’t a part of the team because of his injury. (Notice the lack of shout out to the program and coaches that you typically see in departure messages). It’s not for any of us to say whether that feeling was warranted or not. It was how he felt, and my gut tells me it’s that sentiment being being conveyed to in his tweets.
I don’t find his departure as cause for alarm. It's always a blow when you lose a good player, but Michigan has already recovered admirably. The team's culture and chemistry are clearly strong, and the offense will be fine at tight end. And obviously, given the success absent McNamara and All, the leadership quotient is just fine too. Meanwhile, All can seek out a situation he feels is more conducive to his success moving forward.
You’re never going to have a roster totally devoid of grievance (real or imagined), and this is one of those times where it’s best for the sides to part ways.
Finally, a word about the criticism of any recruiting that McNamara might be doing. I don’t think people whose fandom has been affected by him doing so are wrong for feeling that way, but I don’t think it makes him a bad guy either. What if Olu Oluwatimi has been talking to Fentrell Cypress about Michigan? Is that an underhanded thing to do on his part, or is that just a sign of the times in college football? I think it’s the latter and it's something that fans should get used to. McNamara and All are friends, and All was already feeling like he didn’t fit in Ann Arbor anymore… of course he’s going to recruit his friend. And Iowa would be a great place for All (if he winds up there). A tight end friendly offense where he’s guaranteed to be the QB’s preferred target? He’d be challenged to find a better scenario.
At the same time, I don’t think folks should be concerned about receivers following McNamara to Iowa City. That’s going to be a MUCH tougher sell given the paltry role wideouts play there. Look no further than Charlie Jones as an example of the graveyard Iowa has become for the position. And for the record, I checked specifically on rumors about Darrius Clemons possibly being in the crosshairs and was told unequivocally, “no way! Darrius is happy at Michigan.”
We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground for more portal buzz in the coming hours and days.
