We don’t need validation from the Academy. All this tells me is that there weren’t enough traumatic or negative depictions of black people in film in 2019 for white people to sink their teeth into.
They chose Harriet because it was an anti-black movie with a white savior. Anyone who saw “Us” can see Lupita was much better playing two roles than Cynthia Erivo playing one, but “Harriet” was much more beloved by critics

It looked like a TV movie and I've read that her performance was terrible. The price of the brick just went up though.
And to keep it a buck, Harriet was not a good film. Queen and Slim was awful with a terrible script and poor directing. They don’t deserve to be nominated for any awards.
Along with “Us”, those were the mainstream films marketed for black people last year. “Us” was the only movie that truly deserved a nomination either for the script or the directing.
Edit: Dolemite Is My Name was a Netflix release so it was a long shot anyway. But Eddie deserves all of his accolades for the acting job.
