The origins of the name Puffy (explained)

How did Sean Combs earn the name Puffy . .

Biggie and the Junior Mafia were all together, Puffy came across Biggie and wanted to sign him. Before the signing process he would court him, take him out to dinner and give him hand outs. Whenever Junior Mafia was around he would smoke them out.

In private, Junior Mafia would talk to Biggie and say "What are we doing with this puffy niqqa" . . Biggie would say "Don't worry, this guys got the connects" at this point puffy wasn't used as his name. It was a derogatory term used to insult his character.

So when Puffy was smoking them out, Junior Mafia would refer to him has Puffy and Sean Combs unwittingly adopted an insult as his name
