1 penny costs 1.7 cents to make. So they literally continue to make something that's worthless. How hard is it to round to the nearest nickel

The copper in a penny is worth more than the actual penny but its illegal to melt down/destroy money so you can't.The penny was made for the era where things could cost you 2 cent or 3 cent. There's absolutely no need for it now but the discontinuation of the penny will be one of the first indicators of the government making a serious move
