I've heard a lot of people saying this, and I kinda agree. They definitely went left with the albums after awhile.
But I think it was after Rising Down, that was probably their last album that incorporated the sound that everyone was used to from them. The Roots had one of music's best runs with their first few albums. They were honestly pretty much perfect. So I've forgiven them for the albums I couldn't get with. I still have a ridiculous amount of their stuff to listen to. I'm good with them.

All their albums are dope and How I Got Over wasn't all that 'dark'.
