why do people want this?

http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/1...ves-with-top-tier-specs-and-amazing-packaging
packing a 3.2GHz quad-core Core i5-4570, 16GB of RAM, a GTX780 graphics card with 3GB of memory, a Silverstone ST45SF-G power supply, and what appears to be an ASRock Z87E-ITX motherboard. It’s no slouch, and should be able to run just about anything Steam has to offer on either high or the highest settings possible
My PC i'm using right now has that same motherboard, a Core i7 4770K a GTX 780 and 8GBs of RAM
sits in this case

Yeah its not as flat as the Steam Box but it site on my TV stand perfectly if i put 8GBs more of RAM in it then it's got better specs than that Steam box. basically a Steam box isn't something you can't put together yourself. with mini itx builds you can put it in a reasonably small case too.

whats with the fascination of Valve building the PC for you?

You just answered your own question. Not everyone wants to build shyt themselves. If what you're saying was a factor then consoles wouldn't exist.

consoles have advantages that a custom built PC in a custom case doesn't have.

a console day 1 or year 6 is locked in so you don't have to worry about it becoming outdated until the next generation is upon you. that PC as time goes on will become more and more outdated and run games less effectively. also console makers eat some of the high cost of putting together those custom boxes. i seriously doubt Valve is gonna eat huge losses on those components.

a PS4 is $400 that Steam Box has $1200+ or so worth of components in it. beyond that i can't build an Xbox One or PS4. the networks and OS / features aren't openly available. with Steam you just don't need their box you can do whatever it offers on another PC right now.

Some people want the better experience of a PC without building it.

Valve working on a steam box might mean killing off those overpriced ass alienwares and shyt. This is a GOOD thing

What you're saying makes no sense. If people don't care about consoles becoming outdated why would they care about a Steambox, or any gaming PC, being outdated? Because they can upgrade it?
That has nothing to do with anything. Not everyone is neurotic about constantly upgrading their shyt.

And like I said, if what you're saying was true pre-built gaming PCs wouldn't exist. Do you understand my point? You're asking who this is for, as if everyone on the planet prior to this existing built their own shyt.....which is completely backwards. Most people would rather game on a console because it's convenient. You need zero tech knowledge to use it. Then a subset of that is people that buy pre-built gaming PCs. Then a subset of that is people that built their own shyt and/or constantly upgrade. Those people have no use for this, no, but they're a niche group.

people don't have to build their own PCs now. other people do it as a service as well as computer shops.

with a console they put that together for you with custom components at a discount so you get to pay less than you would otherwise. in the PC world if somebody is building your box for you that's gonna cost you extra on top of the components. no way does Valve sell that steam box with those specs for anything less than $1000.

I don't love building my own PCs either but i understand that if i build it i can easily modify it since i understand how it was put together. i can troubleshoot it better also with that knowledge. the advantages of building your own PCs outweigh the disadvantages.

Valve is more important than the others because of their position.

I didn't read the rest after the red. You are a weird cat and one that has come out and said he gets mad if a new mod comes out and benches your newly purchased card under that glorious 60fps mark that only the obsessed watch on a daily basis with fraps or some shyt.

ok let me put it like this. the Xbox One as a product didn't exist until it was released last month. there was no box on the market that ran the Xbox One's OS and could play it's exclusive games and go on Xbox Live ect. granted some Xbox One games exist on other platforms too but as a total package the Xbox One is unique.

the Steam box is not a unique product. Steam already is on the market. the games Steam runs are already on the market. the Steam OS can be loaded on PCs right now. so what i'm wondering is if all the components that compose the box and the experience are already available on the market why do people care if Valve puts out what effectively amounts to just another PC. what's unique about the Valve PC that makes it stand out? especially considering it's comprised of off the shelf components that are available now. you don't have to build it yourself either companies and individuals offer Custom built PCs as a service.

The point was to make it look like a console, not a smaller computer.. they are trying to get in on the same scam that consoles have been having people on for a decade now. Consoles are just mini computers in smaller boxes. Which blows my mind when people try to argue graphics and hardware, cant they understand its literally impossible for a console to be better :mindblown:
