A U.S. DRONE BASE in a remote part of West Africa has garnered attention for its $100 million construction price tag. But according to new projections from the Air Force, its initial cost will soon be dwarfed by the price of operating the facility — about $30 million a year. By 2024, when the 10-year agreement for use of the base in Agadez, Niger, ends, its construction and operating costs will top a quarter-billion dollars — or around $280 million, to be more precise.

And that’s actually an undercount. The new projections from the Air Force do not include significant additional costs, such as salaries of the personnel stationed at the base or fuel for the aircraft flying out of Agadez. The facility, which is part of the expanded U.S. military footprint in Africa, is now the largest base-building effort ever undertaken by troops in the history of the U.S. Air Force, according to Richard Komurek, a spokesperson for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa.

The outpost — officially a new airfield and associated facilities at Nigerien Air Base 201, or AB 201 — was once billed as a $50 million base dedicated to surveillance drones, and it was to be completed in 2016. Now, it’s slated to be a $100 million base for armed MQ-9 Reaper drones which will finally take flight in 2019, though the construction cost is hardly the end of the tab for the facility.

“It’s probably one of the most remote U.S. military airbases ever built,” said Dan Gettinger, co-founder and co-director of the Center for the Study of the Drone at Bard College and the author of a guide to identifying drone bases from satellite imagery. “Most drone bases on the African continent are appendages to larger airports and airfields, but not Agadez. The existing infrastructure is not there. So, the scale of the project is huge.”

Other than issues convening its cost-effectiveness,I see no issue--at least reserve my option to be concerned until proven counter-productive, which observing the region is highly improbable.

So....... things like this are supposed to go through congress/Senate.
This base is unconstitutional.
Secondly it does not serve the American people.

There are bases all over the globe from the same country that has toppled governments in very recent history & you see no issue?

Forget it.
Americans are content with corruption.
You now require something either mind blowingly corrupt or for it to be tabloid-ish for yall to care.

this doesn't seem that expensive. it's not $280m a year, it's the total cost when the initial 10 year contract is up. maybe i'm desensitized to this shyt, but it seems like a good deal for a strategically valuable location.

america's military footprint around the globe is like nothing else in history.
i don't foresee it's growth stopping anytime soon either.

it's impressive, no doubt about that but it's kinda crazy when you think about it.
the logistics of it all.
actually having the ability to move however many soldiers you need almost anywhere in the
world and maintain a supply chain so thorough that that it includes luxury goods.

the political dealings both domestic and abroad most be mind numbing.

What's the point you ask? The point is...the usa is a global empire, and has no choice but to keep expanding. No this doesn't have a good ending and americans are going to be eating a buffet of shyt eventually.

You dudes sound so apathetic in here, no wonder the entire world hates us because the average citizen doesnt complain about the bullshyt the military is doing in their name... :scust:

Why does the U.S. military gets to build bases on foreign soil and foreign countries cannot do it here in America??? :what: Don't y'all understand shyt like this only makes it worse because you only create MORE terrorism by killing innocent people in the crossfire. But when your rich and white and get kickbacks off this shyt, that's the only thing that matters...:beli:

I agree with your entire post except the part of them being apathetic.
They aren't apathetic, in fact they can be quite enthused & energetic, when told to be so.
But not when it comes to the lives of minorities that do not live in the U.S because such topics are not part of their party's platform.

They will not talk about destroying cities or towns of foreign countries or arming Saudis that destroys towns or cities.
But they WILL scream about refugees being able to move here by escaping the same city or towns destroyed by America's foreign policy.

They just parrot their party's platform & are only angry when the media tells them to be angry.

So they are not apathetic, what they are is indoctrinated!
