Besides being reason #3,246 why the development of nuclear weapons was evil, it also shows why I'll never fully trust nuclear fission as a "green" solution to our energy problems. Anything that creates large amounts of hazardous waste that doesn't go away for centuries is environmentally a really bad idea. We just aren't very good at dealing with permanent hazardous waste in a safe or responsible manner.

I saw a documentary on this. The servicemen tasked with the cleanup were given neither clear instructions, warning, or safety material to do the cleanup safely. So many people became sick and are probably still sick to this day.
