Interesting video, basically it's how the "white trash" characters are used in movies as the personification of "white supremacy" while promoting a newer form of elite white supremacy in the main white characters
Ain’t watch the video yet but I never like the term because it’s always conflated white people who act like Black Stereotypes.
Essentially stating White Trash = The Black Normal
Alternatively there’s the parallel of Black Excellence = The White Normal
And I rebuke that. It’s fukked up. White people don’t get the right to cast out who they feel should not represent them for a more favorable, well groomed image. They gotta hold that
For every Elon Musk there’s 25,000,000 Joe Dirts, so mathematically how Musk become a representative of Whiteness more than any of them
And Black Excellence, although it is as the name suggests, shouldn’t be limited to just brehs & brehettes with 6 certs & degrees. There are far too many people doing amazing things that go unsung among Black people.
It is an attack on the Black Populous to have such distinctions of curated identities within their respective ingroups. Remember that.
Yo I already saw this a couple days ago from my own algorithm.
It had a point, but the takeaway from the videos from that channel always seems
to be “the way you watch TV and movies is ‘problematic’; you should pay more
attention to what the real message is, maaaaan...”
...and I think they might be doing to much thinking trying to analyze Joe Dirt for gems.
I dig The Take and subbed to them years ago.
One of the many film and TV analysis channels that I enjoy and brings me back to my debates and breakdowns in film classes.
I don’t know where they got “black people from Baltimore” but “poor white trash” was coined by house slaves to describe the masses of rural whites that were not the landed gentry.
The house slaves also came up with another term “half-strainer” to describe the smaller class of professional whites (bankers, doctors, lawyers) who lived “in town” and aspired to or tried to “affect” (give the presentation of) the airs of the landed gentry.
The house slaves could easily tell they were perpetrators by their speech, mannerisms, and dispositions because the house slave lived in such close proximity to their ‘aristocratic’ masters, they themselves had learned and adopted aristocratic dispositions and could easily tell apart the whites who were not born that way.
The house slaves were really snarky.
Ironically, it was the house slaves, who served as butlers, nanny’s, cooks, maids, and footmen, and whom reared their master’s children, they were the ones to teach the children upper class manners, how to eat correctly, how to dress, etc.
Those ways certainly carried over into the black community. We have pictures from the 1920’s of family dinner parties during the era of the Great Depression. The tables we’re adorned with crystal candelabras, fine china, and full table settings. I’m talking about...
We still marvel at these pictures but apparently that’s what my family was known for back then. We certainly don’t eat like this now but I suspect it stemmed from what some ancestors may have adopted as house slaves.
White elites, whether liberal or conservative, are the true origins of America’s evils.
The slave master would go to his slaves and tell them that he could ‘help’ protect them from the ‘evil’ white trash lurking outside the gates of his plantation as long as they stayed on the plantation.
He then went to the masses of whites outside his plantation and told them that if the slaves ever got their freedom, they would take their women, their jobs, and their farms.
The slave master played both sides to preserve their own power and wealth.
And we see the effects of it today.
And while the slave master allowed the poor whites to share in “whiteness” and therefore “white privilege”, in reality, he had much more disdain for them than the slaves.
I posted about an an account of a slaveholder who made observations about poor whites while traveling around the south here:
The sentiments echo the portrayals of white elites and poor whites in OP’s video.
And the video in the OP was speaking facts. Media representation of white elites have made it where lower caste whites are the scapegoat for white supremacy. When, in reality, white elites are it’s origins.
We’re seeing it in real-time. Look how they have been rehabbing the images of people like George Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney vs. how the media deals with Trump who has been identified with working class whites. Trump is always going to be associated with white supremacy while Bush, McCain, and Romney go under the radar. They are viewed as a ‘different’ type of republican even though all of them supported policies to disenfranchise black people. And black people buy into it and actively help rehab their images. Think of the Obamas with the Bushes and McCain who ‘stood up’ for Obama when he was being called a foreigner and terrorist. White elites will help black people when it benefits them (the slave master telling the slave that he would ‘help’ protect them insofar as they didn’t try to leave the plantation). The help was conditional on the slaves ability to maintain their power and wealth.
It’s one of the reasons why I liked the show Lovecraft Country. It not only portrayed the white masses as perpetrators of the harsher forms of white supremacy but also the elite Braithwhites. The Braithwhites ‘helped’ the black main characters escape death at the hands of white racist, because it was beneficial to do so. It was beneficial to do so because the black main characters were the key to preserving and maintaining the “magic” that they had acquired. Magic in this instance being symbolic for their white “power”. But what did the Braithwhites need from the black characters? They needed their black bodies which inevitably led to their deaths. The death of blackness and black bodies is what’s needed for white supremacy to survive. And the whites elites know this, so they string us along until the very moment they need us to die.
