When it comes to success, age really is just a number. 28-year-old, Jade Colin is McDonald’s youngest Black franchise owner in the country.

“My business is truly a blessing. It was never something I would have ever thought I would be doing,” says Jade.

The native New Orleanian’s relationship with McDonald’s began when her parents purchased their first restaurant in 2010. Nearly days after graduating from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a bachelors in Business Management in 2012, Jade jumped right into the family business. “I started working in the restaurants learning McDonald’s procedures and policies.”

Eventually, Jade decided to apply for the Next Generation program for children of McDonald’s owners. For two years, she endured the intensive training program. During the first year, she received the Outstanding Restaurant Manager of the Year Award for her region. In year two, she outperformed not only the region but the country and received the Ray Kroc Award. The Ray Kroc Award recognizes the top 1% Restaurant Managers in the country. After graduating from Hamburger University and completing interviews with McDonald’s corporate executives, in 2016, at the age of 26, Jade Colin became McDonald’s youngest Black franchise owner.

Advice
Jade’s advice for those trying to find or figure their passion, “Take the risk and know that it will be a lot of hard work. Pray about it. God sends everyone on a different journey in life. As you build your relationship with Him he will help lead and guide you in the right direction.” She also credits much of her success to having had generous mentors. “Network and have a core team of genuine mentors. You need people who are in your corner that will positively motivate you. I say genuine because not everyone will have your best interest at heart,” says Jade.

Building Generational Wealth
Jade’s biggest inspiration is her parents. In 2010, they opened their first McDonald’s franchise and now they own six. She credits her parents for paving the way for generational wealth in their family. According to the recent study of the racial wealth-gap released this week by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and the Corporation For Economic Development (CFED), the average black household will need 228 years to accumulate as much wealth as their white counterparts hold today. Jade’s parents worked full-time jobs and sometimes second jobs. As an African American community, we need more men and women to know it’s not just about right now but it’s about the generations to come, says Jade.

Gotta bring some serious capital to the table to franchise a McDonald's. But if you can get it together it should almost always be profitable.

Blacks in America people dont need 228 years. They need payments on reparations for all the mistreatment and volatility caused by slavery and racism. White corporation and white slave families need to pay for all that free labor they got. Holocaust Style!

Title is misleading, we are going into it think youngest self made black McDonald's owner. She's not that. No shade but that's what I was expecting to see.

The title is not misleading. She is literally the youngest Black McDonald's franchise owner.

You are correct to say, my clarification of that is that I would assume, as I did, that many people aren't going to find what they think that they are going to find here. We are thinking self-made, for all I know, they could have given her her own McDonald's between when they got their first one and now. In either event, it was given, not earned. Most people will think that she came up on her own to get it, it takes away from the shine a bit to see how she 'acquired' it. That's all.

That said, it's a great story and would love to be able to bequeath something like this to my kids as well. #Goals.

She may not have come from "nothing" but she did earn her chance to be a franchise owner. The article said she was in the top 1% of managers in the company. And like the last paragraph in the article says, this is a rare example of generational wealth working for Black people.
