North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
6 quarterbacks are completing over 70% of their passes.

60% use to be the gold standard.. Only 5 have completed under that.

Jimmy Garoppolo - out for the year. Didn't play much
Baker Mayfield - rookie
Sam Darnold - rookie
Josh Allen - rookie
Tyrod Taylor - now a backup

11 quarterbacks have a passer rating of over 100.

Basically it's really hard to compare any offensive players in this era, with players in the 80's and 90's.

Stats use to mean something, but now the ONLY thing stats are good for as a fan is fantasy football.

The game has become a fantasy driven entity. :snoop:

Rule changes have affected things but one thing y’all don’t acknowledge is the talent pool has just gotten deeper and better. Not just that but offenses have gotten more sophisticated. Screens, short passing game, pick plays. A lot of that has made it easier for qbs to get cheap yards.

Defenses now are more bend don’t break. Average scoring hasn’t gone up much (if at all).

Talent pool is about the same relative to the era.

The problem is that because of the rule changes, players have become more disposable because they can be easily replaced with someone younger and more importantly cheaper.

It's really hard to tell how great a player really is. Some stand out more than others and you also have players that are clearly a step above the rest, but the talent isn't that much better overall physically.

Yeah this is especially crazy. Back in the 90s, anything above 100 and you were pretty much golden.

A lot of these numbers are inflated for alot of reasons, but a BIG part of it is because offenses have abandoned the run game. Back in the 80s and 90s it was pretty normal for a RB to have 20-25 carries per game...seems like it's more like 10-12 now and many of them are Thurman Thomas stars with these "all purpose" yards stats. So now QBs are in a pass happy league with more attempts. Add to the fact that a feather can't touch their helmet and they've gotten pretty comfortable back there.

Also you can't discount the defenseless receiver rule. Now receivers can run crossing routes with no fear. That is where most of the big yards are coming from now. Back in the day, only the most fearless and toughest receivers went across the middle cause if you did, you would get laid out.

They've taken physicality out of the game. That is why its so easy to pass the ball now. Back in the day both QBs and WRs played with the threat of getting destroyed on any pass play. Now you can't touch either which is why the NFL is turning into arena league football.

Yeah those psychological factors that couldn't be accounted for on a stat sheet have been surgically removed by the rules. WR's now run anywhere and make any attempt without any 'fear' entering their minds or obstructing their abilities to make crazy catches. Same with QBs, the fear factor of getting hit (whether it lead to a sack or not) which would alter their ability to make more accurate throws has made it easier. Together, it makes it easier for WRs and QBs to rack up numbers that are unheard of (Antonio Brown etc--great WR though).

15 years ago, guys like Brett Farve were an anomaly and almost inhuman like he was one of the X-Men or something.... top/elite Qbs use to last at most 8 years...maybe 15 (big maybe) including as back ups for a few years

. Now it's become the norm... with guys playing 15 years as a starter, and getting contract renewals for another 4-5 years with the expectation of playing into the early to mid 40s...which was all unthinkable in the 90s all because of these rule changes.
