I don't know where you got the idea that everything made a profit in the 90's, especially hollywood movies. They took chances and experimented way more with various genres than today. Most of the movies that are NOW considered great failed at the box office back when they were released [but were hugely successful on VHS, they don't even get that today...] Goodfellas, Fight Club, The Big Lebowski and a ton of others were "failures". Also, that is a Wes Craven movie, when he was trying to move away from horror movies..
