It's because people have less and less control over their lives as inequality is increasing to unprecedented levels in society. The economy and the political/legal system have a stranglehold on how people can live their lives. People are just holding on, forced to live lives that they didn't really choose.
The world has turned into one big prison camp with the guards walking among the prisoners with special rights. This is the result of a 200+ year rise of anti-intellectualism that is misperceived by people as an age of progress and the pinnacle of the achievement of knowledge through 'science'. In reality the combination of democracy, capitalism, legalism and scientism (liberalism) has been a cancer on the world that has spawned an unsustainable level of narcissism in the world population.

Yeah I had this thought the other day - we already almost halfway through the decade with 2025 around the corner.
