An Old Clip Of George Carlin Taking Issue With Comics Who Target ‘Underdogs’ Has Resurfaced In The Wake Of The Chappelle Controversy

Video will resume shortly

An old George Carlin interview has resurfaced in the wake of Dave Chappelle complaining about being canceled (while performing in front of a packed audience) following the backlash to his Netflix special, The Closer. The clip is from 1990, when the legendary comedian appeared on Larry King’s show to discuss Andrew Dice Clay’s sexist and homophobic jokes.

“I would defend to the death his right to do everything he does,” Carlin admitted. But “the thing that I find unusual, and it’s, you know, not a criticism so much, but his targets are underdog. And comedy traditionally has picked on people in power, people who abuse their power. Women and gays and immigrants are kind of, to my way of thinking, underdog. And, you know, he ought to be careful, because he’s Jewish. And a lot of people who want to pick on these kind of groups, the Jews are on that list. A little further you’ve got women, gays, gypsies and boom, boom, boom, and suddenly you find the Jews.” King asked why Dice Clay was able to “get away” with these offensive jokes that target marginalized communities, to which Carlin replied:

“I think his core audience are young, white males who are threatened by these groups. I think a lot of these guys aren’t sure of their manhood, because that’s a problem when you’re going through adolescence. You know, ‘Am I really, could I be, I hope I’m not one of them.’ And the women who assert themselves and are competent are a threat to these men, and so are immigrants in terms of jobs.”

Thirty-plus years later, Carlin’s wise words are still worth hearing:

I honestly believe George Carlin would not view gay people in 2021 the same way he did in 1990.

" And comedy traditionally has picked on people in power, people who abuse their power."

They just ethered themselves with Carlin's quote. And I'm pretty sure he would be on Dave's side

The whole punching down narrative is growing tiresome. I look at my life, I'm a black male with a middle class income. Why is it that I can't laugh at Caitlyn Jenner or even the white trans showrunner of Dear White People? I'll never see the kind of paper Jenner has, likely never see the paper I'm assuming that showrunner is making. They move and hobnob in influential social circles I'll never gain access to. I'm okay with that too, but why am I not allowed to laugh at them?

I'm beyond tired of hearing about Chappelle.

It says a lot about a society where comedians are the go to for insight (that's shallow at best 99% of the time).

These trans people need to stop. All this is going to do is make Dave and Netflix more money. Both Dave and Netflix are striking while the fire is hot with this shyt. Dave just announced his show in Toronto and that shyt sold out immediately.

this is off topic. but i think it's fukkin hilarious that when men choose to become women, they can't handle even a fifth of the shyt women go through. it's funny that when they become women, all of a sudden their rights are being infringed upon, they are the underdog, they are unequal and we need to fix that. did they not feel that way before transitioning?

so what happens if we strap on equipment that gives them cramps every month for 3 to 7 days for 50-60 years. will they tap out and get their nuts back?

its analogous to those experiments where cacs are black for like 1 day and have PTSD from how differently they are treated

It was only when white men decided they wanted to be white women that all this "transphobia" shyt started. Anything involving CACs at the helm is going to be inherently racist and overly sensitive.
